Emerging from the dentists today (2012 NYCh #22), there was only one treatment I needed this time: a tooth extraction.
After years of dental check ups and needing a filling or two (or six), I got told today that one of my back teeth hadn’t grown properly and had gone rotten under the gum, so it had to come out.
I was told it was going to be a big job and I was given some options:
- Have a general or local anaesthetic
- Have it removed at the hospital, local clinic or at the dental practice
I’ve only ever had a local anaesthetic for fillings and a minor tooth extraction, but this was a bigger job, so he thought I might want to be asleep. But I have a few queries with a general anaesthetic:
- What if I don’t wake up afterwards?
- What if I have a bad reaction to the anaesthetic and something goes wrong?
- What if it doesn’t work?
- What if he gives me the wrong dosage/type?
- I’m scared
Have any of you ever had a general anaesthetic or a major tooth extraction? What was it like? Any advice to help put my mind at rest?

Well I have had many general aesthetics in my time and I am still here to tell the tale. It can make you feel sick but nowadays they can give you something to stop that. If you have the general I imagine you will be at a hospital where you will be monitored carefully. Lets face it when we get up every morning there is no guarantee that you will be alive in the evening. No one can tell you what to do discuss the op with your Mum and Dad then make a decision! Good luck!
